Chapter 9: Why Won't You Bring Back My Child?
Nefertari remained in or near the small house they had been assigned, her belly ever growing as the weeks, then the moons went by. The accommodations were sparse, but the secluded beach upon which it sat was beautiful and Setja was gone during most of each day. For what purpose he'd leave he would not relay, but Nefertari was glad to be alone and away from the outlaw Medjay warlord, whose cold demeanor diminished only when he would dote over her swollen belly and brag of what a great warrior his son would be. She was told not to explore and obeyed accordingly, with the exception of swimming with her dolphin friend each day after Setja left. It was on such a day, late in her pregnancy during a twi- light swim, that Nefertari's growing child and her dolphin friend turned her life around.
For the first few moons the dolphin had tried time and again to coax her to follow it. But Nefertari never did, afraid of where it would take her and concerned for its safety in case someone saw her with it. But she no- ticed that as the child inside her grew, it would kick and move gently in the presence of the dolphin. This strange reaction had become a source of joy for Nefertari - a joy she made sure to keep between herself, the dolphin and the unborn child.
On this particular day though, both the dolphin and the child were insistent. After a few moons of not trying, the dolphin swam back and forth relentlessly, keen on getting Nefertari to follow. But this time it seemed to have help, because the child in her belly would kick and strain against her womb in concert with the dolphin's movement. Finally Nefertari relented and swam after the dolphin, which made the child inside her finally calm down.
They left the area where they usually cavort - ed, gliding past a sandy bend and out towards an active shipping lane. Nefertari began to get tired and tried to turn around, which made the baby kick and kick. Suddenly the dolphin was close, offering her a large back fin to hold on to. Nefertari did just that, and felt the tremendous strength of the creature as it flicked it mighty tail and they took off.
After a few minutes the dolphin dove several feet beneath the surface. It came back up only to let the woman holding on get a good breath of air, only to dive back down again. It quickly be- came apparent that her dolphin friend was being stealthy and Nefertrari drew in close to help it. Soon they came to an area teeming with wooden cages that were built flush against a pier. The wooden bars were thick and sturdy, built from the floor of the sea to the surface. Inside these cages writhed dozens of captive dolphins.
There were several men walking on the long pier that ran parallel to the cages.
